Cochran Sets Career High, Men?s Soccer Falls at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite senior goalkeeper CJ Cochran recording a career high 13 saves, the Georgia State men's soccer team was defeated by Duke 2-1 Tuesday night at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Blue Devils were awarded two penalty kicks in the match. Cochran saved the first spot kick in the 6th minute, but Brody Huitema converted the second in the 47th minute for Duke's second goal which proved to be the difference.

Cochran was busy early and often as he recorded five saves in the first 10 minutes of the first half.

  • First he denied Sean Davis in the third minute on the first shot of the match.
  • Then Huitema tested Cochran with a header but the GSU keeper made the save.
  • In the sixth minute, Cochran saved Zach Mathers penalty kick, his second penalty kick save of the season.
  • Mathers had another chance off the ensuing rebound but the Panther senior made the stop.
  • In the ninth minute Nick Palodichuk tried his luck but Cochran again denied the Blue Devils an opening goal.

Georgia State's first chance fell to Eddie Wilding in the 10th minute but the midfielder's effort was wide. After two shots off target, Duke's Davis fired another shot on goal in the 27th minute but he was denied by Cochran for a second time.

The Blue Devils opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Jeremy Ebobisse found the back of the net off great combination play by Bryson Asher and Davis. However, the lead was short lived as the Panthers pulled a goal back one minute later.

A dangerous ball was played across the 18-yard box that deflected off a Duke defender and past keeper Wilson Fisher to tie the match 1-1. The Blue Devils had two final shots over the final minutes of the first half but both were off target.

  • The Blue Devils held a 12-1 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes.
  • Cochran recorded six saves during the first half.

Duke went on the attack two minutes into the second half with Huitema forcing Cochran to make his seventh save. Less than a minute later, Jake Butwin was fouled in the box giving the Blue Devils their second penalty kick of the match. Huitema converted from the spot to give Duke a 2-1 lead after 47 minutes.

Cochran then saved Huitema's bicycle kick in the 50th minute to keep the score 2-1. Georgia State then had two quality chances to tie the match in the 51st and 52nd minutes.

  • First Wilding fired a shot on goal but it was saved by Fisher.
  • Then McGill tested Fisher with a low effort but he too was denied.

The Blue Devils responded with another scoring opportunity in the 64th minute but Cochran was there for his ninth save. After an off-target effort by McGill, Cochran made his tenth save in the 76th minute to tie his career high.

Cochran registered his 11th save in the 84th minute, however, the senior was not done as he made saves in the 87th and 90th minutes to finish with a career high 13 saves.

  • Duke outshot GSU 14-7 in the second half and 26-8 over 90 minutes.
  • The Blue Devils took seven of nine total corner kicks in the match.
  • Cochran recorded 13 saves to establish a new career high.
