ATLANTA – Thanks to Kylie Ruffule's first career goal, the Georgia State women's soccer team defeated Texas State 1-0 on Senior Day at the GSU Soccer Complex on Sunday, Oct. 26. The Panthers finish the regular season with a 6-9-4 record and 4-4-1 mark in the Sun Belt.
"It was a great way to end the regular season on a high note,” head coach Derek Leader said after the win. “It was a good send off for our seniors and is a fantastic way to build momentum for the conference tournament.”
Prior to kickoff, GSU honored seniors Nikki Fedele, Eryka Hawkins, Elizabeth Kinsel, Lindsay Leonardo and Whitney Ravan for their commitment and dedication to the women's soccer program.
- The Panthers outshot the Bobcats 11-7 over 90 mintues. Both teams had three shots on target
- Brie Haynes recorded three saves en route to her fifth win and sixth shutout of the season.
Texas State's Lynsey Curry had the first two shots of the match in the second and eighth minutes but both were off target. Taylor Allen then fired a shot on goal for the Bobcats in the 10th minute but Haynes was there for the save.
Georgia State's first chance came in the 14th minute but Lauren Harriman's shot was blocked. She had a second opportunity following a Margaret Bruemmer corner kick but her effort was wide right. Haynes made her second save of the match in the 23rd minute on Curry's third shot of the match.
Margaret Bruemmer nearly gave GSU the lead in the 30th minute with a long-range effort. However, her shot was just inches over the crossbar as it landed on the top of the net. Ravan had her first opportunity off a corner kick in the 31st minute but her shot was wide left.
No shots were attempted over the final 14 minutes and the first half ended with the score tied 0-0.
- Both teams attempted four shots during the first 45 minutes of action.
- Texas State had two shots on target and GSU took all three corner kicks.
The Panthers started the second half on the attack with four corner kicks and three shots over the opening 10 minutes.
- After a Margaret Bruemmer corner kick in the 52nd minute, Harriman fired a low shot toward the bottom right corner but it was cleared off the goal line by a Bobcat defender.
- In the 53rd minute, Ravan then had an opportunity off another corner kick but her header was off target.
Georgia State finally broke through to take the lead in the 57th minute when Kylie Ruffule scored her first career goal.
- Ravan won the ball off a Texas State defender on the right flank.
- She dribbled towards the end line before cutting the ball back to Ruffule.
- Ruffule then fired a half volley from the edge of the 18-yard box.
- The ball flew over Bobcat keeper Caitlynn Rinehart's head and into the top-right corner to give GSU a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers continued to apply the pressure on the offensive end and did not allow Texas State to create many quality scoring chances. The Bobcats next opportunity fell to Curry in the 74th minute but her shot sailed harmless high while under pressure from Taina Anglade.
One minute later GSU nearly doubled its lead when Harriman played a perfect through ball to Callie O'Connor. She was one-on-one with Rinehart but the Texas State keeper was quick off her line to make the save and deny the Panthers a second goal.
The Bobcats only had three more shots over the final 15 minutes of the second half. Two were off target and Haynes saved the third to secure the 1-0 shutout victory for Georgia State.
- The Panthers now shift their focus to the Sun Belt Conference Championship that begins on Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Mobile, Ala.
- GSU has secured the sixth seed in the conference tournament.
- Georgia State will face either Georgia Southern or Texas State in the first round depending on tiebreakers.
