BOONE, N.C. – Behind Andy Anglade's 99th minute match-winner, the Georgia State men's soccer team defeated Appalachian State 1-0 for the Panthers' first Sun Belt victory of the season.
“It was a huge to win, especially in the overtime with some of our recent results,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “It was rainy, cold and the final leg of a difficult week of travel. We had a couple of injuries tonight, but we had several guys step up to play some big minutes. It was a great result and now we can move forward.”
The match was deadlocked at zero after 90 hard-fought minutes so the teams headed to overtime. The Mountaineers went on the attack first in extra time, forcing Panther goalkeeper CJ Cochran to make a pair of saves in the first two minutes.
Georgia State's first attack came in the final minute of the first overtime. Ali Elkhalil played a ball behind the Applachian State defense and Anglade was able to use his speed to get open on the right. Then he slotted the ball into the back of the net to clinch the 1-0 win for the Panthers.
- The goal was Anglade's first of the season and second of his Georgia State career.
- GSU improves to 1-1 in conference play and is 5-7 overall.
- The victory snapped the Panthers' four-match losing streak.
“Most of our guys are new to conference play because we have not had any conference results that have counted since 2011,” Surrency said. “Wins like this are huge moving forward as the team learns what is necessary to be successful in a conference.”
In the first half, the teams combined for 10 shots, including five on target, but the neither could find the back of the net. Georgia State took two more shots than the Mountaineers (6-4) in the first 45 minutes.
- In the 13th minute, Eddie Wilding had the first shot on target of the match but it was saved by Appalachian State keeper Holland Hammond.
- Wilding had another opportunity in the 19th minute but he was again denied by Hammond.
- Jad Elkhalil sent a header on target in the 30th but Hammond came up with the save.
- Five minutes later, Ali Elkhalil had a chance but he too could not find the back of the net past Hammond.
- Stanley Broaden's header in 45th minute was the Mountaineers first shot on target but Cochran made the save.
In the second half, Appalachian State went on the attack early with a trio of shots in the first 15 minutes. Donovan Japp's effort was blocked in the 46th minute and Jordan Melia sent his header wide six minutes later. Then, Cochran saved Broaden's shot in the 58th minute to keep the match tied 0-0.
The Panthers had a pair of chances over the next 10 minutes but both were saved by Hammond. The Mountaineers had five of the final six shots of regulation but none were on target. After 90 scoreless minutes the teams headed for overtime with Anglade bagging the match-winner in the 99th minute.
- Cochran finished with four saves on 16 shots faced en route to his second shutout of 2014.
- Georgia State returns to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The Panthers will host Surrency's alma mater Jacksonville at the GSU Soccer Complex.
- Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free GSU soccer scarf.
“First and foremost it will be nice to be at home,” Surrency said. “We will take the positive from this game and try and improve on the areas where we struggled. Hopefully that will lead to a good match against a tough Jacksonville team on Tuesday.”
