TROY, Ala. – A goal in the 61st minute was the difference as the Georgia State women's soccer team was downed 1-0 by Troy Friday night in Troy, Ala. The Panthers now shift their focus to Sunday when they will face Sun Belt leaders South Alabama.
In the first five minutes each team had an early opportunity but both shots were off target. In the 9th minute Kenzie Winters fired a shot on goal for GSU but it was saved Trojan goalkeeper Mikki Lewis.
Only four more shots were attempted in the remainder of the first half.
- First in the 21st minute Alissa Jones' shot was too high for Troy.
- Then two minutes later GSU's Whitney Ravan had a chance but her effort was wide left.
- In the 25th minute Brie Haynes made her first save of the match for Georgia State on a shot by Chelsey Williams.
- The final opportunity of the half came in the 45th minute but Troy's Abby Reynolds fired her shot over the crossbar as the first half buzzer sounded.
At the half, Troy held a slight edge in shots (4-3) and both teams finished with one save. GSU took the only two corner kicks of the first 45 minutes.
The Trojans had the first scoring chance of the second half in the 55th minute, but Williams sent her shot wide of the right post. Six minutes later Troy grabbed a 1-0 lead following a scramble inside the 18-yard box.
- Brie Haynes saved Jones' initial shot in the 60th minute.
- Jones then fired the rebound back on target but Haynes again made the save.
- After the save the ball was deflected off several players in front of goal.
- It fell to Annabell Simpson, who was then able to fire a low shot through traffic and into the bottom-right corner to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead after 61 minutes.
Georgia State had five chances over the next 15 minutes but the Panthers were unable to find the back of the net.
- First in the 66th minute, Ravan was able to turn past a Trojans defender and fire a shot but it was just wide of the left post.
- Ravan had another shot go wide of the left post in the 71st minute
- Then Lauren Harriman missed to the right two minutes later.
- In the 74th minute, Lewis saved Suzanne Arafa's low effort.
- Kylie Ruffule also had a chance in the 74th minute but her shot was too high.
GSU continued to press hard for an equalizer over the final minutes of the second half but were unable to create a quality scoring chance and the match ended 1-0 to Troy.
- The Trojans outshot the Panthers 8-5 in the second half.
- Brie Haynes finished with four saves on 12 shots faced.
- Georgia State returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 19 to face South Alabama at 2 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
