Men's Tennis Falls to Columbia 6-0

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Georgia State men's tennis team lost to No. 40 Columbia Friday afternoon.

The Panthers dropped the doubles point by 6-1 decision at two and three doubles. Freshmen Felipe Jaworski and Valentin Horvat lost Winston Lin and Mike Vermeer, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. Freshmen Jannis Koeke and Eric Baum fell to Dragos Ignat and Richard Pham 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. 

At singles, senior Thomas Cook was the only player to go to a third set. Cook, at No. 1 singles, lost to the No. 8 singles player in the country, Lin, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 singles. Felipe Jaworski fell to Ignat 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Robert Schulze did not finish his match against No. 125 Ashok Narayana.

Koeke, at No. 4, dropped a close match to Max Schnur 6-5 (6), 6-4. Baum lost to Bert Vancura 6-4, 6-3 and junior Sofiane Chevallier lost to Vermeer 6-2, 6-2.

"This one is on me as a coach," head coach Joerg Barthel said. "Our preparation for this match was not at the level of a ranked team this week. I am very proud of our boys to be competitive and positive throughout adversity and we will learn from it.

"Thomas, Robbie and Jannis had very good chances to win their courts and it is encouraging to see the team compete like they did."

The next match for the Panthers will be against ranked opponent on the road. Georgia State will face off with No. 62 Cornell in Ithaca on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 9 a.m.
