WEST POINT, MISS. – Coming off a career-best finish, junior Lauren Court shot an opening-round 1-under 71 Monday to lead the Panthers to a first round 5-over 293 at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational. Georgia State is third of 11 teams with two rounds to play at Old Waverly Country Club.
Court, from nearby Lawrenceville, Ga., reached 4-under after two birdies and an eagle on her opening nine en route to a career-best round. Her previous best came during her freshman year, shooting 72 at the Gator Invitational in 2012.
The 293 was the Panthers lowest round since a 292 at the Cardinal Cup last September and is the lowest in four-rounds this year.
“The team has worked really hard and today, all of that hard work started to pay off,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “They have all been extremely dedicated to getting better and as a coach, you want to see the dividends show in the scores that they can shoot. Today was one of those days. They now know that they can compete with some very good teams and I look forward to the next two days.
“Lauren played some really great golf today. She was disappointed with her finish, but when she thinks of how far she came from last year, she will be able to use that the next time she has a round going that well. Laura also played really well today. Everyone on the team is starting to get into the form that they expect of themselves.
Senior Laura Sanchez made a pair of birdies to finish her first round, shooting an even-par 72 to stand tied for eighth. Sanchez shot 38 on her first-nine, before making three birdies on the second nine to shoot 34 coming in.
After a rough first tournament, senior Maria Palacios rebounded with a first-round 73 to stand tied for 13th. Palacios made a pair of first-nine birdies shot shoot a 1-under 35 on her first-nine.
Senior Melissa Siviter shot an opening-round 77 and stands tied for 32nd with 36-holes to play. After a tough opening-nine stretch shooting 43, Siviter rebounded nicely, shoot a 2-under 34 on the second nine with a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Julie Lied stands tied for 40th following a first-round 79. She finished her round with a birdie at the eight-hole, her 17th of the day.
Host Mississippi State shot an opening round 7-under 281 to take an eight-stroke lead into round two. East Carolina stands at 1-over and in second place, followed by the Panthers in third. Florida International is fourth at 6-over, followed by Sun Belt foe South Alabama in fifth at 9-over.
Mississippi State teammates Ally McDonald and Jessica Peng are one-two atop the leaderboard. McDonald shot a first round 5-under 67, while Peng shot a 3-under 69 to stand two-strokes back. East Carolina's Nico Engstroem Skaug is third at 2-under par, followed by a group of four at 1-under. Include in the group at 1-under is Court, USF's Nicole Autrique, East Carolina's Katie Kirk and FIU's Shelby Coyle.
Old Waverly has hosted numerous events on its championship course, including the 1999 U.S. Women's Open. Old Waverly has also hosted the men's and women's SEC Championship, Southern Golf Association Women's and Junior Championships and the 2006 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.
Designed by U.S. Open winner Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp, the course has been named to Golfweek's Top 100, Golf Digest's Top Course in Mississippi and Golf Digest's Top 100 courses. For "The Waverly," the course will play at 6,113 yards.
Tee times will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with the final round being a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. All times are eastern.

Following this week's action, Georgia State will return to the course Oct. 7-8 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina. It will mark the third-straight year and fifth time in the last six that the Panthers have played in the event in Greenville, N.C.
