Towson, Md.--The Georgia State men's soccer team fell in its Colonial Athletic
Association opener 1-0 at Towson on Saturday morning. The Panthers look to
rebound on Monday night in a 7:30 p.m. showdown in College Park, Md., vs. the
No. 1-ranked Maryland Terrapins.
The Panthers (3-4-0) fell behind in the 48th
minute on a goal from Towson forward Matteo Verucci. Verucci fired in a shot
off a pass from forward Olakunle Banjo. Redshirt freshman Ram Gilad earned an
assist on the goal as well.
Georgia State senior Alex Vivanco and
freshman William Mellors-Blair led the Panthers with two shots apiece in the
match. Freshman Mellors-Blair rang the cross bar in the 77th minute
off a corner kick from sophomore Bo Stroup with GSU trailing 1-0. The Tigers
outshot the Panthers 10-8 for the match while GSU owned a 9-7 edge in corner
kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Vincent Foermer made four saves
in the losing effort. The Seevetal, Germany, native is now 11 saves behind J.B.
Wood for fifth on the GSU career saves list.
Towson (3-4-0) freshman goalkeeper Felix
Petermann made five saves to earn the shutout, the first of his career. Towson
defeated Georgia State for the fourth consecutive time.
