TOWSON, Md. – The Georgia State women's soccer team couldn't
come up the tie-breaking goal in Sunday's match with Towson, and tied the
Tigers 1-1 after two overtime periods.
Coming off a 2-1 loss Friday night to George Mason, the
Panthers (4-10-2) were looking for a better result against Towson (1-14-2)
Sunday afternoon, but both teams got off to a slow start in the match. Freshman
Margaret Bruemmer was issued a red card in the 24th minute, which
forced the team to play with one less player the rest of the match.
After a scoreless 79 minutes, Georgia State was finally able
to get a score in the 80th minute. Junior Jordan Young was able to
score off of a pass from freshman Ashley Nagy. It was Young's third goal of the
season.
Five minutes later, Towson responded with a goal of its own.
Cheyenne Skidmore scored off a header shot to tie the match at 1-1. Neither
team could score again before regulation was over, and the match was sent into
overtime.
In the first overtime period, Towson took two shots. The
first hit the crossbar of the net, and the second was high. Georgia State didn't
manage to get a shot off, and the match went to a second overtime period.
Sophomore Nikki Fedele took a shot four minutes into the second overtime
period, but the shot was wide. Towson took two shots as time was winding down,
but junior goalkeeper Rebecca Toler saved both shots. The match ended in a tie,
the second tie for Georgia State this season.
“I'm happy that we were able to battle for so long. We played
for over 70 minutes without a man, and 90 minutes with one less man than them.
We've got to be sure to be smarter and more disciplined, as it would have been
nice to come out with victory today. But to come out after 110 minutes with a
tie speaks about the fight in our team.
“I'm proud that Jordan was able to get a goal. For the
second game in a row, the back line was superb. Bri Pitre especially was
outstanding in her play.”
Toler ended the match with a total of nine saves, which ties
her most saves made in a match. The last time she made nine saves was the win
over Georgia Southern on Sept. 9. Sophomore Whitney Ravan was the only other
Panther to get a shot on goal.
The Panthers only have one match remaining for the season.
They will host UNCW on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
