ATLANTA—The Georgia State men's soccer team had a penalty-kick opportunity in the dying seconds, but could not convert the chance and fell 1-0 to Drexel at the GSU Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Georgia State (4-10-0, 1-6-0) took nine shots in the second half looking for the equalizer after conceding a penalty-kick goal at the 29:24 mark. Freshman William Mellors-Blair led the Panthers with five shots including two on goal.
The match came down to the wire with Georgia State earning a penatly-kick opportunity with 51 seconds remaining. GSU looked to have scored the game-tying goal as the ball rolled towards an open net, but Drexel defender Tal Bublil batted the ball back into play with his hand. Bublil received a red card which gave GSU redshirt junior Caleb Kernan the chance on the penalty kick. Drexel goalkeeper Tim Washam saved the chance to preserve the 1-0 lead for the Dragons.
GSU narrowly missed scoring the match's first goal in the seventh minute. Senior Alex Vivanco flicked a shot from 15 yards out over Drexel goalkeeper Tim Washam. Before the ball crossed the goal line, Drexel (10-3-2, 6-1-1) defender Bublil headed the ball away to keep the match scoreless.
In the 29th minute, Drexel's Nathan Page scored off a penalty kick to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Washam made seven saves to earn the victory while GSU redshirt sophomore CJ Cochran made two saves.
Georgia State, led by third-year head coach Brett Surrency, next hosts No. 8 Old Dominion on Wednesday night at the GSU Soccer Complex. The 7 p.m. match marks Georgia State's third match against an opponent receiving votes or ranked in the NSCAA National Top 25 this season.
