Greenville, S.C.--The Georgia State women's tennis team started off its 2012 campaign with a 4-3 victory at Furman on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 58-ranked Panthers (1-0) opened up the match by sweeping the three doubles matches against the Paladins. The No. 2 pair of senior Tereza Lerova and junior Whitney Byrd notched the first victory for GSU on the day with a 8-6 victory over Furman's Lauren Kline and Margaret Boyette.
The No. 1 pair of sophomores Abigail Tere-Apisah and Maryna Kozachenko earned a 8-4 win over Furman's Katherine Oudin and Alex Moreno-Kaste. Freshman Masa Grgan teamed with junior Martina Ondrackova to earn a 9-7 victory at No. 3 doubles over Michele Stanford and Amanda Murray.
In singles, Lerova dominated on the way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles over Oudin, the twin sister of professional player Melanie Oudin. Tere-Apisah followed her win with a 6-4, 6-1, victory over Kline at the No. 1 spot. Kozachenko came back to deliver a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in the third spot against Michele Stanford.
After its win over Furman (0-1), Georgia State heads straight to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a showdown with No. 62-ranked Wake Forest on Sunday at 12 noon. The Panthers and Demon Deacons are meeting for the first time. Wake Forest is the first of 10 ranked opponents on GSU's schedule this season.
