Daytona Beach, Fla. - Georgia State women's golfer Charlotte Lorentzen shot 6-over 78 during the opening day of the NCAA East Regional on the par 72, 6,271-yard LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Thursday.
Lorentzen qualified for the NCAA tournament as an individual after finishing the season as the 88th-ranked female collegiate golfer in the nation and the No. 1 golfer in the Colonial Athletic Association.
After struggling through the front nine with three bogeys and a double bogey, the junior from Soroe, Denmark collected two birdies after the turn on holes 11 and 16 to complete the first day of stroke play in a tie for 85th place out of the 126 participants.
As GSU's Student-Athlete of the Year, Lorentzen has continually displayed impressive performances throughout the past season, making her a worthy candidate to compete for a spot at the NCAA National Championship. She has garnered three top-5 finishes, as well as three CAA Golfer of the Week accolades. Her most notable accomplishment of the year came against a star-studded field at the 2011 SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational when she fired a career-best and record-setting 64.
To advance to the NCAA Championship, Lorentzen must finish as one of the top two individuals not on a qualifying team. The top eight schools in the 24-team field advance from the regional to the championship finals held in Bryan, Texas May 18-21.
At the end of the first round, Florida State's Jessica Negron and Coastal Carolina's Jessica Alexander share the lead at 3-under par. Trailing the duo at the top by just one stroke are North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell, California's Daniela Holmqvist and UNC Wilmington's Sofia Hagsund all at 2-under.
Lorentzen continues with the second round of competition at the 2011 NCAA East Regional Friday with a 1:15 p.m. tee time off the 10th tee. She will once again be paired with 66th-ranked Shena Yang of South Florida and Stefanie Kenoyer of Furman.
