Athens, Ga. – Led by junior Charlotte Lorentzen's top-20 finish, the Georgia State women's golf team concluded competition at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic Sunday afternoon in 22nd place. Lorentzen continued with improvement throughout the final round, shooting 73 at the par 72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia golf course.
After struggling with an opening round 311, the Panthers improved, matching their second round 302 during the final round of strokeplay to finish with a combined team score of 915. Although Georgia State was unable to make its way up the leader board that contained a dozen teams in the top-25, the Panthers did notch a victory over Chattanooga, ranked 32nd in the country.
Veering from the normal collegiate play, the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is scoring using the best-ball format in which all five golfers from Georgia State play together on every hole. This unique arrangement counts each team's low score holes from each hole during the round, not the low four scores of the day.
Ranked No. 60 in the country, Lorentzen got off to a steady start, collecting only three bogeys in the first 10 holes while shooting par on the other seven. The Soroe, Denmark native then found her niche, landing four birdies over the final eight holes to finish 1-over on the day. Combined with her first round 77 and second round 74, Lorentzen concluded the tournament at 8-over par and in tie for 15th place.
Freshman Solveig Helgesen duplicated her second round 78 in the final round after carding a career-low first round 77. The Hagavik, Norway native finished with a portion of 73rd place with a combined score of 233.
Junior Charlotte Guilleux shot a final round 82 to finish with a total score 242 and a share of 104th place. Freshman Laura Sanchez also matched her second-round score, firing 80 in the final round to finish with a total of 244.
Redshirt-junior Cherishton Brett continued to improve, shooting a third round 82, one stoke higher than Saturday's score and 11 shots better than her opening round to combine for a final score of 258.
Alabama, the second-best team in the country, held onto the lead, shooting 5-under in the final round. The Crimson Tide was the only team in the 23-team field to finish under par, rounding out the three-day tournament at 4-under. No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Purdue both finished eight strokes back from the lead at 4-over. No. 12 Arkansas finished alone in fourth place at 5-over followed by Florida at 6-over to round out the top five.
In the individual competition, Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia shot a round's best 5-under 67 to take over the top spot and walk away with the gold finishing at 4-under par. Arkansas's Emily Tubert fell two strokes back from the lead to take silver. Duke's Laetitia Beck and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow share the bronze, finishing 1-over. Isabelle Lendl of Florida finished solo in fifth place at 2-over.
The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic was Georgia State's final regular season event.
The Panthers will have nearly three weeks to prepare before competing for their third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title in Pinehurst N.C., April 22-24.
