Gainesville, Fla. – Georgia State women's golfer Charlotte Lorentzen leads the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational by one stroke with 18 holes to play after posting a school record-tying and career-best 6-under 64 in the second round to pace the Panthers, who stand in ninth place.
Lorentzen's immaculate round ties the Georgia State record for lowest round score with former teammate Iliska Verwey, who shot an eight-under 64 in 2008 at the Cincinnati Invitational. Lorentzen also set a GSU record for lowest second round score, beating out the previous record-holder by four strokes. Along with Georgia State records, Lorentzen's second round score set a new tournament record, bettering the previous top individual round at the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational of 66. Lorentzen's 64 marks the lowest score of her career. Her previous low was a 68 in the first round of last year's UCF Challenge.
On a day in which the field played 36 holes, Lorentzen opened the day with a 4-over 74, making five bogeys to just one birdie; however, she bounced back in the afternoon with a 10-stroke turnaround. The Soroe, Denmark native collected seven birdies on her way to a 6-under 64 and a spot at the top of the leader board. She sits at 2-under par and leads Ohio State's Vicky Villanueva by one stroke entering the final round.
The Panthers struggled somewhat during the opening round, shooting 308 to finish the first 18 holes in a tie for 14th place in the 17-team field. With improvement on four of the five golfers' scores, Georgia State climbed five spots in the standings to finish the day in ninth place. The team fired a second round 294, the second-best score of the round, just two strokes higher than first-place Florida.
Junior Charlotte Guilleux began the day with a 3-over 73, followed by a second round 76. She completed the day's competition with a portion of 23rd place.
Following an opening round 80, freshman Laura Sanchez rebounded with a 4-over 74 in the second round and stands in a tie for 44th place entering tomorrow's final round. She jumped 28 places in the standings from round one to round two.
Freshman Solveig Helgesen shot an 81 during the first round and improved by one stroke in the afternoon with a 10-over 80 to finish the day tied for 73rd place. Redshirt-junior Cherishton Brett bettered her opening round score of 88 by seven strokes with a second round 81.
Trailing Lorentzen and Villanueva in individual competition is Hannah Thompson of Florida State in third place at 1-over followed by Florida's Evan Jensen and Colorado's Emily Talley tied for fourth place at 2-over.
Host Florida leads the pack with a combined score of 572 (+12). The Gators have a 17-stroke advantage over second place Florida State (589). No. 22 Arkansas sits in third place with 594 followed by No. 11 Iowa State, Coastal Carolina and Colorado tied for fourth at 596.
