Women?s Golf Finishes Seventh at Kinderlou

Valdosta, Ga. - Highlighted by a top-10 finish from junior Charlotte Guilleux, the Georgia State women's golf team shot a final round 314 to finish in seventh place at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge Tuesday. During the three-day event at the par 73, 6,358-yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, the Panthers compiled a total team score of 930 (+54) to finish in the middle of the 14-team field.

"I am somewhat disappointed in our overall finish," said head coach Cathy Mant. "We did have overcast skies and a little bit of wind but that offers no excuse for our performance. Overall, I do have to congratulate everyone on the team for their effort and attitude. I have yet to see any bad attitudes and that is such a positive thing when playing in a golf tournament that isn't going your way."

Guilleux was the Panthers' top individual, shooting a 7-over 80 during the last round to finish in a two-way tie for eighth place and a final score of 226 (+7). The St. Maur De Fosses, France native began the day in a tie for the top spot but struggled through her back nine to finish eight strokes back from the lead. Guilleux's share of eighth place marks her second top-10 at Georgia State. The junior finished tied for fifth at the Lady Paladin Invitational during the team's fall season.

Landing birdies on three of her last four holes, junior Charlotte Lorentzen fired a 5-over 78 on the day to finish with a share of 13th place. She opened with two rounds of 75 for a total score of 228 (+9).

Freshman Laura Sanchez carded Georgia State's best round of the day with a 3-over 76. The Bogota, Colombia native jumped one spot to claim sole possession of 30th place and a final score 232 (+13).

Freshman Solveig Helgesen also climbed on the leader board during the final round, shooting a 7-over 80 to finish in 65th place with 244 (+25). Rounding out Georgia State's line-up, redshirt-junior Cherishton Brett shot a third round 88 and finished in 73rd place.

"Our big weakness throughout the team was our short game," said Mant. "We are going to continue to practice putting and try to avoid those mistakes. We will have one day of practice before heading back on the road and we are going to keep working on the things we have been working on to prepare for our tournament next weekend."

Chattanooga shot a 2-under 290 during the final round to take over the lead and claim title as champions of the 2011 Kinderlou Forest Challenge with a final score of 896 (+20). Coastal Carolina fell to second place shooting a 13-over 305 during day three to finish at 905 (+29). With a final round 4-over 296, Augusta State jumped from fifth place to take the bronze with a total 909 (+33).  Florida State finished in fourth place at 34-over, followed by East Carolina and Furman tied for fifth place at 44-over.

In the individual competition, Casey Kennedy of Augusta State remained on top and took medalist honors with a final round 1-under 72 to finish at 1-under par. Chattanooga's Yushira Budhram claimed the runner-up spot with a 2-under 71 on day three to finish with an even par. Furman's Laura Wearn rounded out the top-three, shooting 220, followed by Chattanooga's Emma de Groot (222) and Coastal Carolina teammates, Jessica Alexander and Brittany Henderson, tied for fifth place with 223.

Georgia State will return to the links next weekend as the team revisits the Sunshine State to compete in the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., beginning Sunday, March 6.
