ATLANTA - The Georgia State women's tennis team (3-0) defeated Emory, 6-3, Wednesday at Emory. The Panthers won two doubles matches and four singles spots to start the season 3-0.
Because the match was played at Emory, the teams used the Division III, nine-point format, meaning all three doubles matches counted towards the overall score.
Georgia State won two of the three doubles matches to take the lead 2-1 after doubles plays. With each team winning one doubles match, Othilia Lindqvist/Vi Truong won in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 9-8 (7-2).
The Panthers earned a victory at No. 1 singles when sophomore Tereza Lerova won in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Lerova was able to win the last two sets, including a tiebreaker in the second set, 7-4.
Senior Katerina Gresova won at No. 2 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Freshman Maryna Kozachenko earned her third straight win at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Kir Kemp also won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4. Kemp holds a 3-0 record on the season.
Freshman Othilia Lindqvist lost in the third set super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles, 10-5. Lindqvist lost the first set, 6-3, and then won the second, 6-3, before falling in the tiebreaker.
Junior Martina Ondrackova also lost in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
Georgia State returns to action when they travel to Starkville, Miss. to face Mississippi State on Friday at 2 p.m.
