Valdosta, Ga. – Paced by the team's two Charlottes, Georgia State women's golf wrapped up the first day of competition at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge with a share of eighth place in the 14-team field. Juniors Charlotte Lorentzen and Charlotte Guilleux led the Panthers, both firing 2-over 75.
Georgia State completed the first 18 holes with a total team score of 309 (+17) and stands in a tie for eighth place with two other teams, Wisconsin and East Carolina. The trio enters day two six strokes behind the leader and just three strokes behind No. 10 Georgia.
“We hit the ball really well today, but the scores are still not where we want them with the numbers a bit too high,” said head coach Cathy Mant “We had a good rhythm going at times but then would falter with a couple of bogeys. Hopefully we can improve upon that tomorrow with another day underneath our belts.”
Lorentzen and Guilleux finished day one in the top-10 on the leader board, both with a share of ninth place. Each fired three birdies and three bogeys but stumbled on the back nine with a double bogey to finish four shots back from the top spot with 75 (+2).
Freshman Laura Sanchez collected two birdies on her way to a 3-over 76 finish. The Bogota, Colombia native completed the first round in the top 20 with a share of 16th place.
Freshman Solveig Helgesen shot a 10-over 83 to finish in a tie for 67th place. Red-shirt junior Cherishton Brett rounded out the Panthers' line-up with a 91.
Coastal Carolina leads the field with an opening-round 11-over 303. Western Carolina is close behind the top spot with a 304 (+12), while No. 40 Chattanooga rounds out the top-three with a 305 (+13).
In individual competition, Chattnooga's Emma De Groot and Florida State's Hannah Thompson are tied for the lead with a 2-under 71. Casey Kennedy of Augusta State holds sole possession of second place with a 1-under 71. Chattanooga and Florida State also share fourth place with Marion Duvernay and Mary Beth Ramsay both firing an even-par 73.
