ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's soccer team put on
an offensive show Tuesday night as the Panthers handled the Alabama A&M
Bulldogs (0-5) 9-0 at Panthersville.
The last time the
Panthers notched nine goals or more was 13 years ago when Georgia State
defeated Jacksonville State at home 10-0 in 1997. With the win, Georgia State
improves to 4-1-0 on the season.
The nine points on
the scoreboard came from a combination of seven Georgia State players. Freshman
Jewel Evans notched her third and fourth goals of the season, while senior
Stephanie Cuccia registered her second and third. Junior Erinique Owens and
sophomore Sarah Bennett each scored one goal, taking their season totals to two
and four, respectively. Freshmen Briana Pitre and Lyndsay Gaffney each landed
their first goal of the season, and for good measure, back-up goalie Kellianne
Collins notched her first career goal as well. Senior goalkeeper Heidi
Blankenship kept a clean sheet while in goal, earning the win and the shutout.
“We had a lot of
great goals,” said head coach Domenic Martelli. “We were able to use this game
as a building block to prepare us for some of our upcoming games. I feel like
everyone got some great quality minutes and some nice touches on the ball.
Today proved that we used all our players with good playing time so we can get
ready for the next four non-conference games in order to best prepare us for
conference play.”
Georgia State's first
point came in the 29th minute when Owens got a foot on a pass from
senior Kaila Muecke and shot towards Alabama A&M goal. The ball found its
way into the back of the net after Owens' shot deflected off of a Bulldog
defender.
Muecke registered a
second assist on the next goal scored at the 20:34 minute mark when her pass
connected with Evans who powered a shot past the Alabama A&M goalkeeper to take
the score to 2-0.
Less than one minute
ticked from the clock before the Panthers would notch their third goal off an
attack from the kickoff resulting from the previous score. Bennett handled a
pass from Cuccia straight into the left corner of the goal to increase the
score to 3-0.
The Bulldogs' best
scoring opportunity came with less than five minutes left in the first half
when Alabama A&M drew a foul within the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty
kick. Despite the opportunity, the Alabama A&M shot was not powerful enough
to get past the hands of Blankenship and the score remained the same.
Georgia State would
score twice more before the end of the first half. The fourth goal came from
Pitre who wrangled the ball that was lofted from a Cuccia corner kick. Collins
took the score to 5-0 with a strong shot from over 25 yards out at the 1:25
minute mark that landed in the left corner of the net and put the Panthers
ahead by five at the end of the half.
The second half
started off strong for Georgia State with the sixth goal scored at the 34:11
minute mark. Gaffney dribbled a pass from sophomore Megan Geiger down the far
sideline and sent a cross in front of the goal where Cuccia was well-positioned
to kick the ball in the net and take the score to 6-0.
Just three minutes
later, Gaffney would contribute to another goal for the Panthers. In the 31st
minute, Gaffney lined up to take an arcing corner kick for Georgia State that
landed in the back of the net after a deflection of a Bulldog defender.
Evans registered her
second goal of the match-up at the 15:07 minute mark when she found herself
one-on-one with the Alabama A&M goalkeeper. She beat the goalkeeper and was
left with an empty goal to gain the point and increase the score to 8-0.
The Panthers' final
goal came in the last 10 minutes of play when Cuccia once again found the right
place at the far post to knock in a well-placed pass from Evans.
“After the win, we
need to turn our attention to the Nike Port City Classic and Troy University,”
said Martelli. “We need to continue to improve and get healthy. A lot of
players who were not 100 percent are getting close to healthy and we are only
as good as all of our players, as this victory showed today.”
Georgia
State will begin its two weekends on the road this Friday at the Nike Port City
Classic in Mobile, Ala. The Panthers will first take on Troy University Friday,
Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. ET before turning their attention to the University of South
Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
