ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-2-2, 1-1-0 CAA) battled hard but fell to VCU (4-1-3, 1-0-1 CAA), 2-0, on Wednesday night in Panthersville.
Georgia State had some opportunities in the first half when in the 21st minute sophomore Gimel Gordon made a run at the goal but his shot attempt was blocked by a Rams' defender.
VCU would strike first in the 25th minute when Jose Carlo Castillo made a pass to teammate Jason Johnson who blasted a shot past Panther's keeper Vincent Foermer to make the score 1-0. It was his first goal of the season.
The Panthers would end the half only trailing 1-0 heading into the second half.
Georgia State would have another opportunity in the 50th minute when sophomore Eric Lawrence fired a shot on goal but VCU keeper Gabriel Rodriguez made the save.
Sophomore Alex Vivanco had a chance to score the equalizer in the 77th minute but his shot attempt went just high over the cross bar.
VCU added an insurance goal late in the game when in the 87th minute Johnson placed a header that hit the crossbar and just rattled into the back of the net to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. It was Johnson's second goal of the game.
Foermer would finish the game with four saves for the Panthers.
Georgia State heads out on the road for the first time in conference play this weekend as they travel to Hampstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra on Saturday at 7 p.m.
