Box score vs. Delaware
ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's soccer team (4-1-2, 1-0-0 CAA) scored two second half goals to defeat Delaware (1-4-1, 0-1-0 CAA), 2-1, in the CAA opener on Saturday afternoon in Panthersville. The victory marks the first time since 2005 that the Panthers have won their conference home opener, when they defeated William & Mary, 3-2, in double overtime.
Georgia State wasted no time in the second half, in the 49th minute when freshman Michael Nwiloh raced down the field making a perfect cross into the box, where junior Ayokunle Lumpkin one touched the ball into the back of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish. Lumpkin scored his first goal of the season for the Panthers.
"Great run by Michael Nwiloh, wonderful ball and that is what we have talked about with Ayokunle Lumpkin," said head coach Brett Surrency. "If you can be in the right spots, the balls will be on your foot, so it is up to him to put them into the back of the net." "From there Ayokunle (Lumpkin), will grow and by getting this goal today it will give him some confidence going forward."
In the 64th minute the Panthers would add an insurance goal when sophomore Yasser Majluf made a long pass to the feet of freshman Evan Scott who beat the keeper one on one for the goal, making it a 2-0 lead. Scott scored his first goal of the season and first of his collegiate career.
"This was a game made for Evan Scott, we knew coming in there would be some opportunities for him," said Surrency. "For a freshman to get one, you can get over that hurdle and I think there will be more to come from Evan (Scott)."
Scott would finish the game with three shots and a couple of opportunities to add to his scoring total on the day.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vincent Foermer kept the game scoreless in the first half with three key saves for Georgia State.
Delaware added a goal late in the 87th minute to take away the shutout from Foermer. Delaware's Evans Firmpong fired a shot that hit the post and the rebound came right back to him that he put away in the right corner of the net to cut the lead to 2-1.
Foermer would come up with five saves in the second half to finish the game with a season-high eight saves. He has 31 saves in seven games this season and has posted a 1.07 goals against average.
Lumpkin lead the team with three shots including three on goal. The Panthers would finish the game with 11 shots including seven on goal.
The Panthers welcomed back All-CAA defender Christopher Peacos, who had been sidelined due to injury for the first six games of the season.
"It was great to see Christopher Peacos step back in there, it allows us to due some different things and the more those guys can train together it will help our defense be much improved," said Surrency.
Georgia State continues its conference home stand against VCU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Panthersville.
