Albuquerque, N.M. – Paced by junior Charlotte Lorentzen's share of 11th place in individual competition, the Georgia State women's golf team finished 13th of 17 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on the Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. Saturday.
Georgia State improved its shooting during the final round of stroke play, finishing the day's 18 holes at a respectable five over par 297. Only four teams shot lower in Saturday's last round of competition. Despite the Panthers' enhanced performance, they were unable to climb in the rankings and remained in 13th place in a line-up that included three top-25 teams to finish the invitational, shooting 315-306-297—918 (+42).
Lorentzen led the team in the final round, closing the round with a notable three under par 70 to move her up on the individual leader board 14 places from T25th to T11th. Over the three rounds of play, the Soroe, Denmark native fired nine total birdies and took a share of fifth place in par five scoring with a 4.67.
Junior transfer Charlotte Guilleux finished competition with a part of 49th place, shooting a one over par 74. Guilleux rose 10 spots in the individual rankings by shooting a nearly even par round. She shot even through her first six holes before earning a birdie on her seventh and an unfortunate double bogey on her 11th, but returned to shooting par through her final seven holes.
Freshman Jenny Haggblom completed the tournament tied for 53rd place. She registered four birdies in the final round to end the day at three over par 76, an improvement over her first round 83 (+10).
After carding a pair of 80s of the first day, freshman Laura Sanchez lowered her score by three shooting a round of four over par 77 on Saturday to bring the Panthers to a final round score of 297 (+5).
Freshman Solveigh Helgesen wrapped up her tournament with a 79 (+6) to finish with a share of 59th place. Although she had a rough start, Helgesen rebounded with the Panthers' only eagle of the tournament at the 466-yard 18th hole.
Oregon walked away with the gold in both team and individual competition. The team beat out their 16 competitors shooting a total 881 (+5). Oregon's Erica Omlid earned medalist honors firing a eight under par 211.
The Georgia State women's golf team returns to the links Oct. 2-3 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
