Women's Golf Wraps Up Day One in 13th

Albuquerque, N.M. – Georgia State women's golf, led by Charlotte Lorentzen's tie for 25th, finished the first day of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in 13th of 17 teams on the par-73, 6,187 yard Championship Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Georgia State fired a 315-306—621 (+37) to finish the day in 13th place. The Panthers had a slow start to the morning but improved as the day progressed, bettering their first round score by nine shots in the afternoon round.

“Even though we didn't perform perfectly well, we did hit a lot of good shots this afternoon,” said head coach Cathy Mant. “It was a long day, playing 36 holes. A lot of things were new for the ladies and it just took some getting used too throughout the day. There is a lot of potential in the green, but I think there were some obstacles on the course today. Some of the holes were on the side of the hills and I think that was a little different than most of the ladies are used to. We've had time now to observe and evaluate how everyone is doing in an actual tournament. Overall, I feel like a lot of good things came out of today and the ladies showed a lot of promise.”

Lorentzen led the team shooting 79-72—152 (+5) to end the day. As the only veteran on the line-up, Lorentzen is representing Georgia State in the top-25 as she currently sits in a tie for 25th on the individual leader board.

Freshman Solveig Helgesen carded the next best score firing a 78-79—157 (+11) to pick up a share of 56th place. Just trailing Helgesen tied for 59th place, are teammates junior Charlotte Guilleux and freshman Jenny Haggblom who both ended strokeplay at 158 (+12).

Freshman Laura Sanchez showed promise in the early part of the first round, shooting one over par through her first 14 holes. Sanchez found trouble, however, at the difficult 375 yard, par-5 third hole and could not regain her momentum. Sanchez ended the day carding a pair of 80s and settled for a share of 68th place.

No. 24 Ohio State leads the team competition at three over par and University of Las Vegas' Therese Koelback sits atop the individual leader after posting 70-70—140 (-6) at the end of day one.

Tomorrow's final round begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available www.GolfStat.com. Full results and details will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the close of competition.
