ATLANTA -- The Georgia State men's soccer team recently announced the signing of Evan Scott and Diego Marzuca, who signed national letters of intent to play soccer in 2010 for Georgia State.
Evan Scott, Forward (Columbus, Ga., Hardaway HS): His 193 career goals ranked fifth all-time nationally and was just 20 goals shy of tying the all-time record of 213, set by Sean Shapert back in 1984, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
"Evan is a kid that really excites me because of his tremendous upside," said head coach Brett Surrency. I have no doubt that he will step onto the team and be one of the most athletic players that we have next season. "In addition, he has clearly shown that he can score goals on the high school and club levels and we are hoping that goal scoring prowess will translate over to the college game."
Scott has been a part of numerous team championships including the 2009 U-17 GSA Super Cup Championship. During his prep seasons at Hardaway high school he helped his team reach the 2009 Region 3 AAAA Elite 8, 2008 Region 3 AAA Elite 8, and the 2007 Region 3 AAA Semi-Finalist.
He has received many accolades including a three-time Iron Hawk recipient, four-time All Bi-City First team member, 2010 Bi-City Player of the Year, and the MVP of the Georgia Soccer Coaches All-Star game. He finished his senior season with 63 goals including five goals in the Georgia Soccer Coaches All-Star game.
Diego Marzuca, Midfielder (Santiago, Chile, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile)
Diego Marzuca played his club soccer with the Universidad Catolica Youth Team from 2003-07. He also earned numerous championships including the Wales International Soccer Tournament (2006); Veracuz Cup (2006), Mexico; National Tournament (2007). He also earned the Saint George College Best Player Award in 2004, and 2007.
"Diego grew up playing in the youth systems of one of Chile's most successful clubs, Catholica, so I anticipate his transition to the college game will be smooth," said Surrency. "Like Scott, he will bring a great deal of athleticism in particular excellent pace. He is a natural lefty and we envision him immediately competing for a spot on the left side of midfield. Another plus is that Diego will have a familiar face at GSU in sophomore Yasser Majluf, as the two grew up playing together at Catholica."
The Georgia State men's soccer team is making its preparations for the 2010 season and opens the preseason with a road game against Wake Forest on Saturday August, 21 in Winston-Salem, N.C. at 7 p.m.
