The 43rd-ranked Georgia State women's golf team, led by sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen's medalist honor, captured the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association championship on the 6,002 yard, par 72 Old Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Sunday.
Lorentzen fired the best round of the tournament, a 69 (-3), to pull away from the field over the final eighteen and win by a margin of ten shots.
"I'm really proud of them, and what a round Charlotte played today," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "She played really steady, awesome golf."
"It was cold this morning, but the wind didn't blow as much thankfully. They played well. I couldn't be prouder of them. I just know that they're talented and that they'd do what it takes. Now we're going to gear up for regionals and nationals."
Lorentzen's margin of victory ties the all-time CAA Championship record, set in 2006 by former Georgia State golfer Lisbeth Meincke. Her three-round total of 217 (+1) is second only to Cathrine Madsen's 211 in 2008.
The Soroe, Denmark native becomes the third Panther in school history to earn medalist honors at the CAA Championship, the last being Cathrine Madsen. Her victory marks the sixth time a Georgia State golfer has picked up a victory at a conference championship.
The event marks Lorentzen's first career victory. Her previous best finish was a second place at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational.
"It was one of my goals this year to get a win," said Lorentzen. "This was one of the last tournaments to do it so I'm really excited about it, it was nice."
"I was pretty fortunate getting a few birdies on the front nine to get a little gap. It was all about being patient and hitting the ball well, just getting the job done. My putting and short game really helped today."
As a team, Georgia State wins the event by nine shots, with James Madison representing their closest competition. The Panthers earn an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional with the win.
The Panthers' victory is their third all-time at the CAA Championship, the sixth conference championship in school history.
By defending their 2009 title, the Panthers are the first program in Georgia State athletics to repeat as conference champions since men's golf pulled the feat in 2005 and 2006.
Head coach Cathy Mant guides Georgia State to their third-straight NCAA Regional, the fourth all-time. Mant earned her 21st career victory this week.
Senior Cathrine Madsen and freshman Ellie Robinson both earned top-10s, improving their positioning over the final round. Madsen moved up three places to eighth with a 76 (+4). Robinson also posted a 76 (+4) to move from 15th to a tie for ninth on the final day.
Junior Iliska Verwey wrapped up the scoring for the Panthers' final round 300 (+12) by firing a 79 (+7) to earn a share of 13th place.
Senior Sandra Maier finished the event in 18th place overall after wrapping up her tournament with an 81 (+9).
The Panthers will now await word from the NCAA selection committee this week as they prepare for their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance.
