Panthers, Lorentzen Lead Entering Final Round

The nationally 43rd-ranked Georgia State women's golf team and sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen took the lead in the team and individual competitions at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association championship on the 6,002 yard, par 70 Old Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Saturday.

Lorentzen fired a 73 (+1), the best round of the day, withstanding winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour. Only two of 50 golfers broke 76 on the day, Lorentzen and James Madison's Catrin Gunnarsson. With one round left to play, Lorentzen holds a two stroke lead over Gunnarsson and Nicole Sakamoto, both of James Madison.

"Charlotte played great golf today," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "We're thrilled that she has a chance to get a win this week, and we're pleased to be on top of the leaderboard going into the final round. The wind really played a big role with the scoring today, but we're hoping for a good day tomorrow. We want to play well and do what it takes to get a conference championship."

The Soroe, Denmark native seeks to become the third Panther in school history to earn medalist honors at the CAA Championship. The last was teammate Cathrine Madsen in 2008. Lisbeth Meincke won the event in 2006. Georgia State has had five medalists, all-time, at conference championship events.

A win for Lorentzen would mean her first career medalist honor. Her previous best finishes are a tie for second at the 2009 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational and a share of fourth place at the 2010 UCF Challenge.

Senior Cathrine Madsen carded an 82 (+10) to drop into a tie with teammates Iliska Verwey and Sandra Maier

Verwey posted a 79 (+7) and Maier finished with an 82 (+10). Verwey picked up seven spots on a difficult second day.

Freshman Ellie Robinson fired an 81 (+9) to hold on to 15th place overall.

The Panthers hold a one stroke lead over James Madison and a two shot advantage over UNC Wilmington. Their team score of 315 (+27) tied James Madison for the best round of the day.

Georgia State is looking for the fifth conference championship in school history, and the third in five years as a member of the CAA. All of the Panthers conference titles have come during the tenure of head coach Cathy Mant.

A win at the CAA Championship will assure the Panthers an automatic berth to an NCAA Regional, awarding them their third-straight NCAA appearance, their sixth all-time.

The final round of the 2010 CAA Championship begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. Live scoring for the event is available at www.GolfStat.com. Full results and details will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the conclusion of play.
