Georgia State women's golf finished the first round one shot back of the lead at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association championship, behind the top-10 efforts of Charlotte Lorentzen, Cathrine Madsen, and Sandra Maier on 6,002 yard, par 72 Old Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. Friday.
"I was pleased with the way we played today," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "The girls did what they had to do, putting themselves in a good position heading into the weekend. I'm thrilled to have three golfers in the top-10, for them to have a chance to win here. We're excited to get back on the course tomorrow and try to take the lead."
Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen fired an opening round 75 (+3), good for a share of third place overall, and placing her one back of co-leaders Carmen Perez-Narbon of UNC Wilmington and Nicole Sakamoto of James Madison.
The Soroe, Denmark native's only previous experience at the CAA Championship came last season as Lorentzen finished 13th. Entering this year's conference championship, Lorentzen has posted pair of strong finishes, 13th and 14th, at Georgia and Florida's events, respectively.
Seniors Cathrine Madsen and Sandra Maier each posted 77 (+5) on the first day, earning shares of seventh place overall.
Madsen came into the CAA Championship ranked #1 among CAA golfers. The Herning, Denmark native became the second Panther in school history to earn a medalist honor at the CAA Championship in 2008 and stands to be the first two-time medalist in school history with a win this week.
Maier has struggled lately, but historically plays well in CAA conference championships. The Grossbottwar, Germany native has a third place and a fifth place finish in two tries at the conference championship.
In 2009, Maier opened with a 77, her opening round score this year, before posting 71-73 over the final two days to claim a third place finish and All-Tournament honors.
Freshman Ellie Robinson made her CAA Championship debut Friday, carding a 79 (+7) to settle into a tie for 15th place. If Robinson can hold on to her standing she would equal her best career finish, set this spring at the UCF Challenge.
Junior Iliska Verwey held on to a top-20 standing with her opening round 80 (+8). Verwey has never finished outside the top-10 at a CAA Championship. Her best career finish is sixth, set as a freshman in 2008.
Heading into the weekend, the Panthers will square off against UNC Wilmington, a familiar foe. In 2009, Georgia State outlasted the Seahawks by one shot to take the conference championship.
Live scoring for the second round of the 2010 CAA Championship will be available at www.GolfStat.com beginning at 9 a.m. Full results and details will be posted to www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the close of competition.
