Georgia State women's golf, led by Charlotte Lorentzen's tie for 37th, finished the first day of the Sun Trust Gator Women's Golf Invitational in 11th of 15 teams on the par-70, 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
The Panthers improved by 12 shots in the afternoon round, carding a 20-over par 300 to move up two spots on the team leaderboard.
"It was pretty difficult to watch, we did not play well," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "We left a lot of shots on the golf course and it was tough. I'm not sure why it was such a slow start this morning. We have a couple of people that aren't at 100%, but we're hoping to get through the week and regroup. I'm not really happy with the way we performed, but everybody is ready to give it everything we have tomorrow."
Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen was looking for a repeat performance of her second place finish last season in Gainesville, but has struggled thus far, following a seven-over 77 in the morning round and a six-over par 76 in the afternoon.
The Soroe, Denmark native settled into a tie for 37th at day's end, five shots back of a top-20 finish.
Junior Iliska Verwey carded a pair of 77s to pick up a share of 40th, tying her with freshman Ellie Robinson at 154 (+14). Robinson followed up a 79 with an afternoon 75 (+5), helping her up the leaderboard in her first SunTrust appearance.
Senior Cathrine Madsen had to settle for a share of 49th place after playing the first 36 holes in 15-over par. Madsen had a streak of seven-straight top-20s snapped at the Panthers' last event, and will need a positive final round to get back on track.
Senior Sandra Maier sits in a tie for 53rd, but posted the Panthers' best round of the day with her final round 73 (+3).
Florida State leads the team competition at 17-over par, thanks to an even-par second round. Michigan State's Laura Kueny leads all individuals after posting 73-68--141 (+1) on day one.
Tomorrow's final round begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com. Full results and details will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the close of competition.
