Women's Tennis Wins Thriller Against Samford, 4-3

Atlanta, Ga. – The Georgia State women's tennis team (2-7) earned its second win of the season by defeating Samford (6-4), 4-3 at Piedmont Park. Sophomore Kir Kemp won the clinching point at No. 3 singles winning 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

Georgia State started out the match by winning both doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The team of Diana Nakic/Kir Kemp beat Taylor Morgan/Lindsey Mallory, 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match.

With sophomore Linda Hricistova sitting out the match due to being sick, the Panthers had to play with just five players.

Sophomore Diana Nakic continued her winning ways after a straight sets win over Taylor Morgan, 6-0, 6-1. Nakic, ranked #38 nationally in singles, improved to 9-0 in singles play this season. Junior Katerina Gresova also won in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Lindsey Mallory. Gresova has won three straight matches at No. 4 singles.

In the match of the afternoon it came down to the No. 3 singles players to decide the match. Sophomore Kir Kemp won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second 1-6. In the third set tie breaker, Kemp fell behind 5-1. Kemp rallied to withstand multiple match points from Samford's Madelie Van Rensburg before winning six straight games to take the third set 7-5.

“This was a big win for our team today, we played a very tough Samford team that fought with us every step of the way. The way our girls came out and played was something we really needed to happen in the match. “This was a big step for us and going forward we will need to continue to play with the same intensity to be successful in the future,” said head coach Miha Lisac.

The Panthers will return to action on March 14th when they play North Texas on the campus of Georgia Tech at 11 a.m.
