GSU Sweeps Howard in Thursday Doubleheader

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Georgia State bats pounded out 16 runs on 19 hits as the Panthers' softball team swept Howard in a Wednesday doubleheader, 6-0 and 10-1.

"It was nice to get a couple of wins before we head to the Buzz Classic tomorrow," said head coach Bob Heck. "We had strong performances from many individuals tonight. Hopefully we can carry the momentum into the weekend."

The Panthers (9-3) return to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they face off against North Florida in the Buzz Classic. GSU meets Kentucky at 6 p.m. Howard falls to 1-3 and will also compete in the Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Ga.

Game One - Georgia State 6, Howard 0 

Junior Heather Lowry pitched five innings of two-hit ball and the Panthers scored five runs in the first three innings to top Howard, 6-0.

Leading the way for GSU was junior Lauren Jones, who hit her second home run of the season in the first inning driving in a pair of GSU runners. Senior Danielle Roddy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

Lowry (1-0) pitched five innings allowing only two hits, while striking out five.

Game Two - Georgia State 10, Howard 1 (6)

Senior Lily Skelton bashed out four RBI and pitcher Elizabeth Thomas pitched a complete game as GSU knocked off the Bison in six innings, 10-1.

The Panthers produced 10 hits and Howard walked GSU nine times. Roddy, junior Rebecca Roles and Skelton all had multi-hit games.

Picking up the loss for the Bison was Carly Martin, who allowed four runs on three hits, while surrendering three walks.
