Panthers Split with Chattanooga in Mid-Week DH

POST-GAME INTERVIEW

Pitcher Heather Lowry

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Heather Lowry tossed a three-hit shutout and Tiffany Bess provided the offfense with a two-run double as Georgia State blanked Chattanooga, 2-0, in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday at Bob Heck Field. Chattanooga claimed game two, 5-1, behind three RBI from Tiffany Baker.

The Panthers return to action this Friday when they open their home CAA schedule with a three-game set against Drexel. Friday's game is set to begin at 5 p.m., while a Saturday doubleheader gets going at 12 p.m. All games will be available via livestats.

Game One - Georgia State 2, Chattanooga 0

Lowry (3-4), who out-dueled the Lady Mocs' star pitcher Brooke Loudermilk, allowed only three hits, while walking none, in picking up the complete game shutout. Loudermilk (12-6) allowed two runs on four hits to suffer the loss.

The Panthers picked up their only two runs in the second inning. After Lauren Jones walked and Lily Skelton singled to left field, Rachel Cunningham laid down a sacrifice bunt that successfully advanced the runners. After a fly out, Bess stepped up and slapped a double to right center that scored both Jones and Skelton.

Two runs were all Lowry needed however, as she caused the Lady Mocs to continually ground out to GSU infielders and hit short pop ups to Panther fielders.

Besides Bess' double, Danielle Roddy, Skelton and Rebecca Roles also picked up hits.

Game Two - Chattanooga 5, Georgia State 1

Chattanooga pitchers Nikki Waters and Kandice Irwin combined to allow only one run (zero earned), while striking out six Panther batters as the Lady Mocs rebounded to knock off GSU, 5-1, in game two.

UTC scored runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. In the second, Baker hit a solo homer off starting pitcher Elizabeth Thomas to give the Lady Mocs the early 1-0 lead. Later Nikki Waters scored on a Lauren Flores' single.

In the fourth, Jessica Traxler singled to left field, scoring Baker. Baker added her second home run of the game in the fifth, scoring two, to give the Lady Mocs a 5-1 lead.

Leading the way for UTC was Baker, who went 3-for-3 with two homers and three RBI in the contest. Lauren Flores was also 3-for-3 with one RBI. The Panthers scattered seven hits over the course of the game, but couldn't get runs across the plate. In a losing effort, both Jones and Cunningham had a pair of hits.

Suffering the loss for the Panthers was Thomas (2-2), who went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. In relief, Langford pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits, while striking out five.

The Panthers scored their lone run on a fielding error by the shortstop. Cunningham scored on the play.
