Panthers Finish 13th, Lorentzen 13th Among Individuals

Georgia State finished 13th of 23, led by sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen's 13th place finish, at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. Sunday.

Lorentzen closed with a final round 76 (+4) to card a 227 (+11), and earned a share of 13th place among a field comprised of the nation's best golfers.

The Soroe, Denmark native finished one shot back of nationally top-ranked Cydney Clanton of Auburn, and picked up wins over 27 of the top 100 golfers in the country.

As a team, the Panthers notched victories over #16 Georgia, #31 Tulane, #11 Tennessee, #33 Kent State, #12 Florida, #47 Furman, #50 Mississippi, UCF, Mississippi State, and a second Georgia squad.

“We started out the day a little slow, had a couple of double bogies in the first three holes, but then we started playing pretty good,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “Unfortunately, we came back a little at the end.”

Senior Sandra Maier narrowly missed her second-straight top-25 as she finished in a tie for 26th with a final round 76 (+4). Maier finished three shots back of her teammate, Lorentzen, at 230 (+14).

Senior Cathrine Madsen posted her best round of the tournament, a 73 (+1), in the final round to move up 21 places to 47th. Madsen moved up 53 positions over the final two days after opening with an 85 (+13).

The 47th place finish marks Madsen's best in three events at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Junior Iliska Verwey finished 86th after carding a final round 81 (+9) to round out the Panthers' final round 306 (+18). Freshman Ellie Robinson wrapped up her tournament with an 83 (+11) to finish in 102nd.

The Panthers posted their all-time best team finish at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Their previous best was a 14th of 21 at the 2008 NCAA East Regional. Georgia State's only other trip to the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic resulted in a 17th of 18 in 2007.

“The girls are hitting the ball really well, but our short games just need a little work,” said Mant. “That's the only difference between us and the very top teams right now.”

“We need to make a few better decisions, and we'll try to correct that as we head to the conference championship and the regionals. I think the girls know now that they can play at that level and we'll look forward to getting to work. I'm really proud of them, proud of the effort they made.”

Georgia State returns to the course April 10-11 at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
