Panthers and Madsen Lead After 36 at Home

Georgia State women's golf followed an opening round 300 (+12) with a second round 301 (+13) to open an eight-shot lead over a 13 team field at the 2010 John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate.

Senior Cathrine Madsen rebounded from an opening round 76 to grab a share of the lead by posting the low-round of the day, a 70 (-2), in the afternoon at the par 72, 6,047 yard Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. Monday.

The Panthers had three golfers post top-10 finishes in an opening day dominated by difficult scoring conditions. Heavy rain, and even a brief period of snow and sleet mixture, tested the players throughout the day.

Ellie Robinson battled the elements to post a first round 74, which earned her a share of second place, one shot back of opening round leader Sofia Bjorkman of Troy. Robinson played the front nine in one-under par, one of only three players to turn in an under-par side.

In the second round, Robinson came back to the field with a 79 (+7), but holds on to a share of 10th place overall.

Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen and junior Iliska Verwey shared fourth place for the Panthers after carding 75s (+3) in the first round. Verwey is looking for her best finish of the season. Lorentzen could be in line for a career-best finish. Her previous best was a tie for second at the 2009 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational.

In the afternoon, Verwey repeated her 75 to move up to third place overall, well inside her best finish of the season to date. Lorentzen posted a 77 in the afternoon, dropping to ninth place alone.

Senior Cathrine Madsen came in one shot behind Verwey and Lorentzen in the morning, firing a first round 76 (+4) to settle into a tie for ninth.

In the afternoon, Madsen fired the best round of the tournament, a 2-under par 70 to jump into a tie for first with Daytona State's Jennifer Gartin at 2-over for the tournament. Madsen and Gartin share a four shot lead over their nearest competitors.

Senior Sandra Maier, attempting to repeat as John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate champion, shot a 78 (+6) in the first round to pick up a share of 22nd place. A second round 80 dropped her into a tie for 24th.

Playing as individuals, senior Nicole Loesch shot an 84-78--162 (+12) and junior Cherishton Brett carded an 88-89--177 (+16).

Loesch is playing in her first event since the season opening Hooter's Match Play Championship. Brett is returning to the course for the first time since carding a career-best 78 at the 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate.

The Panthers lead Chattanooga by five shots and Daytona State College by seven shots entering the second round. Daytona State held on, dropping only one shot on Georgia State, as Chattanooga faltered, posting a 322.

Georgia State is looking for a three-peat at this year's John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. The Panthers are the defending 2008 and 2009 champions at their home event.

The final round of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate begins tomorrow at 8:50 a.m. Live scoring for the event is unavailable, but full results and a recap will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the end of the final round.
