Panthers End Up One Shy in Miami

Georgia State finished second place, one shot back of UCF, Tuesday at the Hurricane Invitational after posting a final round 303 (+15) on the par-72, 6,199 yard Don Shula's Golf Resort.

"It was windy and cold today," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "Putts didn't fall, we had some big numbers, that's all tough to take. But the team gave it their all and came up one shy, so I'm proud of the effort."

Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen turned in the low-round of the day for the Panthers, a 73 (+1) to climb 20 spots and into a tie for 17th. The Soroe, Denmark native picks up her sixth career top-20, the second of the season.

Senior Cathrine Madsen entered the final round one shot back of leader, and eventual medalist, Christine Wong of San Diego State, but stumbled with a final round 78 (+6) earning her a fourth place finish. Wong won the event at 1-over par.

With the top-five, Madsen grows her career total to six, and extends her top-20 streak to five, dating back to the 2009 Golfweek Conference Challenge. With four top-10s this season, the Herning, Denmark native is one shy of equaling her 2008-09 total.

Senior Sandra Maier also had difficulties during the final round, but played well enough to post her third top-20 of the season, a 12th place finish. Maier carded a final round 79 (+7) after playing the opening 36 holes in 2-over par.

Junior Iliska Verwey bounced back from a second round 84 with an encouraging round of 2-over par. Verwey's three round total of 231 came courtesy a roller coaster of an event, an opening round 73, second round 84, and final round 74.

Freshman Ellie Robinson had her score counted in all three rounds. A final round of 78 (+6) gave the Middlesbrough, England native a share of 34th place for the tournament.

Though the Panthers failed to repeat in Miami, their second place finish pushes their record further beyond .500, positioning them for a possible at-large berth in the NCAA Regional. Georgia State sits at 58-32 heading into their next event.

"This tournament started the semester off on a good note for us," said Mant. "We've had some weather that hasn't really let us practice as much as we want. As the weather improves, I think we'll be able to tie some things down and we'll be in great shape."

Georgia State returns to the course on March 1 for the UCF Invitational at Red Tail Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., the final tuneup before they host the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate on March 22.
