Panthers First, Madsen One Shot Off Lead in Miami

With senior Cathrine Madsen moving into second place after a 2-under par 70, Georgia State women's golf held onto their four shot lead, despite more difficult playing conditions, in the second round of the Hurricane Invitational in Miami Lakes, Fla. Monday.

"Today was considerably more difficult for us than the opening round," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "I don't know what it was, but everything looked so easy for us on the first day. Today, you could tell that the girls had to work much harder."

Madsen followed her opening round 74 with the second-best score of the day to move up eight spots at the par 72, 6,199 yard Don Shula's Golf Resort. The Herning, Denmark native sits at even-par, one shot back of San Diego's Christine Wong for the overall lead.

Madsen has played the par-fives better than anyone in the field, 3-under par through two rounds. She also has seven birdies to her credit at the end of 36.

The Panthers posted a first round 292 (+4), but fared worse in the second round, carding a 300 (+12) to finish the day at 16-over par, four shots in front of San Diego State and eight shots ahead of Coastal Carolina and UCF.

"We're very pleased with our performance so far," said Mant. "Considering the lack of practice and preparation we've had, because of the recent weather, it's good to see the girls playing well and having success."

Senior Sandra Maier stayed in the top-five with a 74 (+2). Maier finished the first round in a tie for second place, but slipped three spots on day two.

Freshman Ellie Robinson posted a 79, dropping her from a tie for sixth to a tie for 22nd. Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen repeated her 77 from a day ago, placing 37th at +10. Junior Iliska Verwey carded an 84 after an opening round 73 to fall into a tie for 53rd.

The Panthers will tee off at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow for the final round of the Hurricane Invitational, looking to repeat as tournament champions.

Live scoring is unavailable for the Hurricane Invitational, but a full recap of the tomorrow's events will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the conclusion of play.
