With four golfers in the top ten, Georgia State women's golf leads the Hurricane Invitational by four shots after one round at the par 72, 6,199 yard Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla. Sunday.
Senior Sandra Maier led the way for the Panthers with a 72 (E) to earn a share of second place. Maier is in a four-way tie, three shots behind San Diego State's Christine Wong.
Junior Iliska Verwey and freshman Ellie Robinson are tied, one shot behind Maier, with a pair of 73s to position themselves in a four-way tie for sixth. Verwey played the par fours in 3-under, better than any other golfer in the field.
Senior Cathrine Madsen's 74 (+2) nets her a share of 10th place, as she tries for her fourth top-10 of the season.
Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen posted an opening round of 77 (+5) to end the day in a tie for 34th.
The Panthers lead the tournament by four strokes after totaling a 292 (+4), as they look to defend their 2009 title.
Coastal Carolina represents Georgia State's closest competition, the only other team to break 300 on the day.
Tomorrow, the Panthers will return to the course at 12:30 p.m. for a shotgun start. The second round takes place tomorrow, with the tournament coming to a close on Tuesday.
