Cookville, Tn. -- Sophomore Calvin Kemp won in straight sets but Tennessee Tech (1-1) won five singles matches to defeat Georgia State (5-2), 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers will travel to Chattanooga, Tn. to play the Mocs on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Schedule Update: Georgia State, due to the cancellation of the Austin Peay match earlier in the season, have picked up a match against Chattanooga on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Panthers started out well by taking the doubles point after two victories from Calvin Kemp/Trenton Spinks and Victor Valente/Henri Mangin. Georgia State won two out of the three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 advantage in the match.
In the No. 1 singles match, Alex Chen held off freshman Victor Valente, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Valente took the first set but lost the last two to drop just his second loss overall on the season. Kemp continues his perfect start to the 2010 season by defeating Josh Girling, 6-3, 6-1.
Tennessee Tech won the final four singles matches to earn the victory. Sophomore Jackson Moore lost a tough three-setter against Oscar Pachon, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
"We are still a work in progress. Playing indoors is something that we need to improve on. We look forward to playing Chattanooga Sunday," said head coach Chase Hodges.
