Knoxville, Tenn. – The Georgia State women's golf team
improved play during the second day of competition in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate
Championship, climbing one spot on the leader board to ninth. All golfers in
the Panther line-up bettered their scores from Friday to give Georgia State a
second-round 294 (+6), 10 shots lower than its first-round score.
Freshman Jenny
Haggblom remained in the lead for the Panthers, firing an even par 72 in the
second round of play. Despite landing three birdies in her last five holes, the
Eckero, Finland native dropped one spot in the rankings and enters the final 18
holes tied for 13th place.
The three other
Panther newcomers each carded a 2-over 74 to improve upon their first-round
scores. Freshman Laura Sanchez bettered her score by one stroke in the second
round to rise three spots in the rankings to a share of 30th place.

place. Freshman Solveig Helgesen made a large improvement, bettering her
first-round score by eight strokes to propel herself forward 13 spots in the

Redshirt
junior Cherishton Brett also showed improvement from her first 18 holes,
shooting a second-round 91.
“I'm really proud of
my team today,” said head coach Cathy Mant. “They played very, very well. The
ladies really hung in there and played solid golf today. There is still room
for improvement but I was really excited to see the four newcomers pick up the
pace and produce a great score. We are looking forward to playing tomorrow. Our
goal is to definitely finish in the top eight so that we can receive an invitation
back to the tournament because it is such a wonderful event. Everyone stepped
up. We asked everyone to try to improve a stroke or two after the first round and
everybody improved.”
Host
Tennessee remains on top in both team and individual competition. As a team,
Tennessee leads second-place TCU by 20 strokes with a total score of 12-under
par 564. Tennessee's Erica Popson maintains the lead in individual competition
with an 8-under 136.
Competition
