Greenville,
S.C. – Paced
by junior Charlotte Lorentzen's runner-up finish in individual competition, the
Georgia State women's golf team fired the round's second-best 307 (+19) during the
final day of stroke play on Sunday in Greenville, S.C. to finish the Lady Paladin
Invitational in second place out of the 17-team field. Georgia State's No. 2 spot on the final leader
board represents its best finish of the 2010 fall season.
The Panthers ended the first round on top
but struggled through a windy second round to drop to second place. Although
the team bettered their day two score by 13 strokes in the final round, it was
not enough to overtake first-place Chattanooga's lead and Georgia State claimed
the runner-up title shooting a 302-320-307—929 (+65).
“We definitely had some ups and downs,” said
head coach Cathy Mant. “Yesterday was a down but at the same time we did have
an opportunity to go out and win the tournament today. It was within our grasp
but in the end we just couldn't reach the top spot.”
Lorentzen entered the final round in a tie
for first place, vying for her second career medalist honor. The Soroe, Denmark
native fired a 2-over 74 on the last 18 holes to remain in a tie for first
place with defending Lady Paladin Invitational champion, Sandra Changkija of
Nova Southeastern. Lorentzen fell to Changkija on the second hole of a sudden death
playoff to finish the tournament in second place and claim her fourth career
top-five. Although she did not claim the
top prize, Lorentzen led the tournament in par 3 scoring at an even par.
Junior transfer Charlotte Guilleux played
her best round of the tournament, 2-over 74, to rise two spots on the
individual leader board and end in a tie for fifth place. Her share of No. 5
represents her highest finish in the Panthers' fall season as well as her first
top-five while playing at Georgia State.
Freshman Jenny Haggblom improved her
second-round score by four strokes, firing a 7-over 79 in the final round. The
Eckero, Finland native tied for first place in the tournament for most birdies
with nine and finished with a share of 19th place overall.
Freshman Solveig Helgesen played her best
round of the weekend, shooting an 8-over 80 to finish in a tie for 48th
place, eight spots higher than her day two finish. Freshman Laura Sanchez also shot
her tournament best, 9-over 81, in the final round to wrap up play in a tie for
60th place.
No. 42 Chattanooga held on to first place,
shooting a 302 (+14) during the final day to finish 14 strokes ahead of
runner-up Georgia State. Last year's champion, Nova Southeastern, finished in
third place with 933 (69+) followed by Longwood University (937) and host
Furman (939) in fourth and fifth place.
Behind Changkija and Lorentzen, East
Tennessee State's Sian Evans took third place in individual competition,
shooting a 54-hole total of 224 (+8) followed by Chattanooga's Emma de Groot in
fourth place with 226 (+10).
“Being the last tournament of the fall
season, we will definitely learn from this tournament as well as the others we
have competed in over the past two months,” said Mant. “We have some things to
work on in the off-season to prepare and get ready for our spring season. We
have a very talented group and it is just a matter of getting all of our pieces
aligned.”
The Lady Paladin Invitational ended the
Panthers' fall season. The team will take the next three months off before
returning to the links for the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. beginning on
Feb. 13.
