Panthers Battle No. 22 Hofstra to 3-2 OT Loss

Hempstead, N.Y. - Despite fighting to an even score at the end of regulation, the Georgia State women's soccer team fell 3-2 to No. 22 Hofstra (15-1, 9-0) in overtime in Hempstead, N.Y. on Friday evening. The loss drops Georgia State, the eighth-ranked team in the Mid-Atlantic region, to 11-5-2 on the season and 5-3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Although the Panthers suffered defeat, they remain in one of the top four spots in the CAA as the team continues to battle for a spot in the conference tournament.

Freshman forward Jewel Evans knocked in the first goal of the match, taking her to eight goals on the season and tying sophomore Sarah Bennett for the team lead. Sophomore midfielder Erinique Owens supplied the ball to Evans, her second assist of the season. Freshman defender Alyssia Feronti registered the Panthers' second goal as well as her second of the season off a free kick.

The Panther defense played a strong game, allowing only three goals despite Hofstra's 29 total shots throughout the nearly 95 minutes of action. Junior goalkeeper Kellianne Collins played the entire game and denied nine of Hofstra's shots on goal.

"Hofstra is such a good team and taking a team that is 22nd in the country into overtime, shows our teams' talent," said head coach Domenic Martelli.  "I am very proud of our girls. Our back line played a tremendous game, Bri (Cagle), Lani (Huntley), Briana (Pitre), Alyssia (Feronti), they all really stepped it up. It was an intense game, physical and strong, really just an unbelievable game overall. I would have to say it was one of our best games of the year. It shows that we can play with top teams in the country. To compete the way we did with the No. 1 team in our conference, we have truly raised the bar again on a season that has already been successful and spectacular."

Georgia State was the first to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Evans at the 29:55 minute mark. Just two and a half minutes earlier, Evans took a shot on goal that was too high but when given a second chance, she would not miss. Owens delivered a through ball to Evans leaving her alone with the Pride's goalkeeper. Evans fired a shot that got past Hofstra's keeper and into the lower left corner of the net to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Hofstra found the equalizing goal off a free kick opportunity with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. A Georgia State foul resulted in a free kick for the Pride 35 yards out. Hofstra's Amy Turner took the kick and the ball found its way into the back of the Panthers' goal to even the score at one apiece going into halftime.

Soon after the beginning of the second half, Hofstra was awarded a penalty kick resulting from a Georgia State handball inside the 18-yard box. The Pride's Tiffany Yovino fired a shot that Collins was unable to save and Hofstra took a 2-1 lead.

Following their score, the Pride launched eight shots, yet Georgia State's defense remained solid denying all of their chances on goal to allow the Panther offense an opportunity to find the equalizer.

The Panthers' tying goal came at the 78:56 mark off a free kick at the top of the 18-yard box. Feronti booted a ball right through Hofstra's defensive wall and into the back of the net to even the score 2-2.

Hofstra attempted three more shots in the remaining 11 minutes of regulation, yet none were successful and the clock ticked to zero with the score tied at two apiece.

Just under five minutes into the first overtime period, Hofstra landed the game-winner with a successful header into the goal off a chipped in cross from the far post to give the Pride the 3-2 victory.

"When you look at this kind of a game, win, lose or draw we have to take something from it," said Martelli.  "We have to do whatever it takes to finish the game off and get a result. We also have to make sure we show up again and play this way. Our goal is to get ourselves back, remember all the positives from this game and play our biggest game of the season on against Northeastern on Sunday for all the marbles."

The Georgia State women's soccer team will continue its weekend of CAA competition on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. as the team takes on Northeastern in Boston, Mass.
