Knoxville, Tenn. – The Georgia State women's golf team
finished 13th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in
Knoxville, Tenn. on Sunday. The Panthers were led by freshman Laura Sanchez,
who finished in a tie for 30th place firing a 1-over par 73 in her
best round of the weekend. Sanchez finishes with a total 222 (+6) to record her
best 54-hole score thus far this season.
The Panthers posted
a round of 306 (+18) during the final day to wrap up stroke play with scores of
304-294-306—904 (+40). Georgia State slipped four spots from ninth to 13th
over the final 18 at the par-72 6,302 yard Holston Hills Country Club course.
After leading the
Panthers at the end of round two tied for 13th place, freshman Jenny
Haggblom struggled through her final round of play, shooting a 7-over par 79.
She finished in 37th place with scores of 73-72-79—224 (+8).
Junior transfer
Charlotte Guilleux matched her first round score of 4-over par 76 during her
final 18 holes. Throughout the three day tournament, she posted a 76-74-76—226 (+10)
to finish with a share of 42nd place.
After struggling
through the first two rounds, redshirt junior Cherishton Brett found her niche
in the final round firing a 6-over par 78. Shooting a final-round 10-over par
82, freshman Solveig Helgesen landed in a tie for 70th place.
Host Tennessee came
away with the gold, shooting an impressive 15-under par 849 over the three
rounds. No. 14 Arkansas finished in second place, 20 strokes behind the champion
at 869 (+5). No. 18 Kent State rounded out the top three with a total score of
874 (+10).
Tennessee sophomore
Erica Popson won the individual title with a 15-foot birdie on the first
playoff hole. Ole Miss junior Natalie Gleadall captured runner-up. The pair set
a new Mercedes-Benz tournament record for 54-hole score, both finishing at
9-under par 207.
The Georgia State
women's golf team will wrap up its fall season in three weeks as the Panthers
travel to Greenville, S.C. to compete in the Paladin Invitational, Oct. 29-31.
