Golf Finishes 10th at Hooters Match Play

Georgia State women's golf fell to TCU 3-2-0 in the championship of the consolation bracket at the Hooters Women's Collegiate Match Play Tuesday in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The Panthers advanced to the championship round with a pair of victories on Monday, knocking off North Carolina and Kent State. The loss to TCU places Georgia State 10th of 16.

Sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen came away with one of two victories for the Panthers, defeating Melissa Loh 1-up with a chip-in for birdie on the final hole.

Lorentzen fired a round of 73 (+1) that included an eagle on the par-5 second. Neither player took a lead of more than 1-up during the match.

Lorentzen finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0-0 record, winning matches 4 & 3, 3 & 2, and 1-up.

Freshman Ellie Robinson notched the other victory for Georgia State, defeating TCU's Brooke Beeler 2 & 1. Robinson was slotted in the #2 spot for the Panthers and finished the tournament with a 2-0-0 record. Aside from conceding the third hole, Robinson played 16 holes in 2-over par.

"We got behind the eight-ball early, TCU was really throwing birdies at us left and right," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "But our girls fought tough, and we got a couple of nice wins."

"I thought that the tenth place finish was a great showing for us against this good of a field. This was a great event, a great start to the season for us, and a great experience," said Mant.

Senior Sandra Maier lost a close contest against Louise Kristersson 2 & 1. Maier finished the tournament with a record of 1-1-1. Maier pulled out a critical halve in the second round by playing the last nine holes in even-par.

Senior Cathrine Madsen and junior Iliska Verwey suffered defeats in the final round. Madsen fell 5 & 4 to Valentine Derrey to finish the event with a 2-1-0 record. Verwey lost 7 & 5 to Rachel Raastad to finish with the record of 1-1-1.

Finishing 10th of 16, the Panthers picked up wins over Duke, Kent State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, UCF, and Colorado, while also gaining valuable strength of schedule by taking on the nation's best.

Next week, Georgia State travels to Las Vegas, Nev. for the inaugural Golfweek Conference Challenge, featuring teams from 18 different conferences around the nation. Georgia State was chosen as the CAA representative for their conference championship in 2008.
