Golf Defeats UNC, Kent State at Hooters Collegiate

Senior Cathrine Madsen won both of her matches by playing 31 holes in 2-under par, leading Georgia State women's golf to a 2-0 record in Monday's match play portion of the Hooters Women's Collegiate Match Play Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., as the Panthers defeated North Carolina and Kent State.

"I'm really proud of the girls today," said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. "Even though we won the opening match 5-0, it felt like an up-and-down round. In the second match, the girls played some really good golf to come through when we needed the win."

Georgia State squared off against North Carolina in the opening round of the tournament, sweeping the Tar Heels 5-0-0. Charlotte Lorentzen dispatched North Carolina's Kate Thomas 4 & 3. Lorenzten played 15 holes in 3-over par to get the win.

Iliska Verwey defeated North Carolina's #1 golfer Catherine O'Donnell 1-up by winning the third-to-last hole and halving the final two.

Freshman Ellie Robinson shot a 74 (+2) to defeat Courtney Gunter 1-up in 18 holes. Playing in her first tournament as a Panther, Robinson took the lead on the 17th hole of the round to seal the victory.

Cathrine Madsen defeated Margaret Pentrack 5 & 4, playing 14 holes in even-par, to seal the Panthers' shutout victory in the morning round.

In the afternoon, Georgia State turned in a clutch performance against Kent State to win 2-1-2.

Iliska Verwey clawed her way back from a 3-down deficit with eight holes to play to earn a halve against Kent State's #1 Sarah Bradley.

Charlotte Lorentzen and Cathrine Madsen notched the two victories for Georgia State. Lorentzen earned a 3 & 2 victory over Mandi Morrow. Madsen knocked off Mercedes Germino by playing 17 holes in 2-under par.

Nicole Loesch, playing in her first round of the year, suffered a 6 & 4 defeat at the hands of Martina Gavier. Sandra Maier controlled a difficult match, never falling into a deficit with Shamira Marshall to earn a halve.

"We hit the ball really well today," said Mant. "Tomorrow we're going to come out and try to get a win. After the stroke play, we knew that we wouldn't be in the championship bracket, but we wanted to play as well as possible. We can do that by winning our bracket tomorrow."

Georgia State will play a single 18-hole match tomorrow against TCU for the championship of the consolation bracket. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com. Full scores will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the end of competition.
