Women's Golf Finishes 13th in Daytona Beach

Paced by Charlotte Lorentzen's 71 (-1), Georgia State women's golf finished 13th out of 16 teams Sunday at the Hooters Women's Collegiate Match Play Championship at the par-72 LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Teams played 36 holes of stroke play, today, to seed the match play portion of the tournament beginning tomorrow. The top eight teams qualified for the championship bracket.

“Unfortunately, we didn't do what we needed to do to get to the championship bracket,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “But we're looking forward to tomorrow to get the chance to go out and win our bracket.”

Georgia State fired a 315-295—610 (+34) to finish in 13th place. Florida finished first on the opening day with rounds of 293-292—585 (+9). Joining Florida in the championship bracket are South Carolina (+10), LSU (+13), Auburn (+14), Georgia (+16), Alabama (+24), Virginia (+25), and Chattanooga (+26).

Georgia State will compete against Kent State (+27), Duke (+29), TCU (+31), Mississippi (+47), Colorado (+48), and UCF (+60).

“The course was really wet this morning,” said Mant. “We were on the course for eleven hours today, which was pretty painful. We're disappointed with the scoring in the first round, but I'm greatly proud of what the girls did in the afternoon. We didn't give up and they hung in there and fought.”

The Panthers were led by sophomore Charlotte Lorentzen's 80-71—151 to finish the stroke play portion of the tournament tied for 29th place. After suffering through a rough opening round, Lorentzen regained her composure with two birdies and one bogey in the second round. Her 71 marks the third best score turned in during the second round.

Junior Iliska Verwey fired rounds of 81 and 72 for a 153 (+9) and a 42nd place finish. After a difficult opening round in which Verwey posted two double bogies and a triple, she righted the ship with a solid two birdie, two bogey second round.

Sandra Maier finished one stroke back of her teammate at +10 with a 76-78—154. Maier owns a share of 46th place.

Freshman Ellie Robinson made her collegiate debut with rounds of 78-77—155 (+11) to finish in 53rd place, one stroke back of Maier. “I'm really proud of Ellie,” said Mant. “She went out and hung in there in her first event and played well for us.”

Cathrine Madsen rounded out the scoring for the Panthers, finishing in 56th place with an 81-75—156 (+12).

Tomorrow, Georgia State golfers will be paired with opponents in a match play format as the Panthers gain valuable experience against the nation's best. Each golfer will play two 18-hole matches, beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday will feature one 18-hole match.
