Elon, N.C. - The Georgia State volleyball team opened the Elon Invitational on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18) win over Navy. Senior Jocelyn Waldern led the Panthers with 10 kills and a .588 hitting percentage as Georgia State improved to 9-3 on the season.
The Panthers are off to their best start under head coach Mike Webster, now in his sixth year with the program.
Waldern finished the match with eight digs and tied for the team high with five blocks as the Panthers scored 16 as a team.
Junior Ashley Jones fell one dig shy of a double-double with 15 kills and nine assists. Jones has already scored two triple-doubles this season and added six digs for the Panthers.
Redshirt-sophomore Vineece Verdun, who has been named to the all-tournament teams of the last two tournaments that Georgia State has played, scored 10 kills and three blocks.
Sophomore Muki Kangwa added six kills and tied her career high with five blocks, while freshman Jamiee Freeman grabbed a career high 12 digs.
Redshirt-junior Audrey Cantrell, who moved into Georgia State's all-time top ten in digs last weekend, scored a team high 15.
Sophomore Chelsea Perry tied a career high with 33 assists, set in the first match of the season against The Citadel, while adding three kills.
The Panthers scored 16 kills and just one error in the fourth and final set, hitting .556 as a team.
With the loss, Navy dropped to 2-9 on the season.
The Midshipmen were led by Carolyn Ewert's 13 kills, while Abbie Merkl added 10. Jenny Rudewicz led Navy with 33 assists.
Georgia State will return to the court on Saturday for a pair of matches. State will face the host Phoenix (10-0) at 12:30 p.m., before facing Norfolk State (2-9) at 4:30 p.m.
