Sandra Maier's 71 (+1) led the 27th-ranked Georgia State women's golf team as they cut UNC Wilmington's lead to three at the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association championship Saturday at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Maier posted 77-71?148 (+8) moved her up nine spots to third place after round two. Her 71 ties the best round of the tournament so far, Sarah Whitney of William & Mary is the only other player to post a 71.
The wind from Friday settled a bit on Saturday to provide lower scoring at the par 70, 6,030 yard Lake View Golf Course at Callaway Gardens Resort, though no player has been able to match or better par thus far.
As a team, the Panthers posted a 296 (+16) to enter the final round at 304-296?600 (+40), three back of the leaders, UNC Wilmington.
UNC Wilmington held on to their lead from Friday by carding a team score of 297 to go 300-297?597 (+37), led by Carmen Perez-Narbon whose 73-72?145 (+5) leads the individual competition.
For the Panthers, freshman Charlotte Lorentzen contributed a 73 (+3) to go with her first round of 76 moving to +9 a claiming a share of fourth place. Lorentzen enters Sunday among a group of five players within four shots of Perez-Narbon, a group which includes fellow Panther Sandra Maier.
Senior Anna Scott finished Friday alone in ninth place after posting a 77 (+7). Heading to Sunday, Scott has carded 74-77?151 (+11).
Junior Cathrine Madsen represents the fourth Panther in the overall top-10 after firing 77-75?152 (+12) over the first 36 holes.
Sophomore Iliska Verwey held near the top-10 in 14th by posting 77-78?155 (+15) after two rounds.
In the team competition, Georgia State will chase frontrunner UNC Wilmington tomorrow attempting to spoil a Seahawks repeat. Behind Georgia State are James Madison (+53), Richmond (+56), William & Mary (+62), Towson (+75), Xavier (+86), Dayton (+89), Old Dominion (+102), and Hofstra (+111).
Tomorrow's threat of severe weather has forced the CAA to go to split tees for Sunday's final round. Teams will tee off of both 1 and 10 tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m.
