Woodstock, Ga. (March 8, 2009) The Georgia State University softball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles 6-1 on the third and final day of the 2009 Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Ga.
Sophomore Rebecca Roles led the team with four RBI, including a three-run homer, while sophomore Lauren Jones hit a solo home run to earn her an RBI, and junior Lily Skelton also recorded a single RBI.
Senior hurler Madi Gore pitched the complete game and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Gore's record improves to 5-4 in the circle this season.
The Panthers started out aggressive and made it through their entire batting order in the first inning. State scored four runs in the first, including the three-run homer from second baseman Roles.
The first inning started off with a single to left field from third baseman Danielle Roddy. Catcher Catherine Lee also hit a single to left field, moving Roddy to second base. Junior Lily Skelton earned an RBI when she hit a single to right field and allowed Roddy to cross the plate.
With Lee on second and Skelton on first, sophomore Roles stepped up and knocked a home run over the left center field fence. This is Roles's first home run of the season and second of her career.
Winthrop scored their lone run in the sixth inning off a home run to center field from right fielder Lisa Kingsmore.
The Panthers kept their bats swinging in the sixth inning, as Lauren Jones hit a home run to left center field to record the sixth and final State run.
Georgia State is back in action on Wednesday, March 11th as they travel to Western Carolina for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
