BURLINGTON, N.C./ROCK HILL, S.C. (March 22, 2009) The Georgia State men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Elon on Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and a 6-1 loss to Winthrop on Sunday at the Memorial Courts to fall to 0-17 on the season.
The Panthers (0-17) dropped the doubles point with losses at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Doubles tangent Trenton Spinks and Jackson Moore fell 8-2 to Elon's Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec. William Adeimy and Lucas Thomaz followed with an 8-2 loss to Chase Helpingstine and Carlin Murray at No. 2 to give the Phoenix the point.
Elon (11-4) picked up its eighth straight win sweeping the singles competition. William Adeimy suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Cody Stauffer-Macdowell at No. 6, followed by Lucas Thomaz's 6-3, 6-1 loss to Chase Helpingstine at No. 4. Elon's Philip Nemec clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Henri Mangin at No. 3 for the Phoenix's fourth match point.
"Even though our record is not where we'd like it to be, we still need to believe that we have a chance at winning," said head coach Jarod Camerota. "We need to come out with more energy and things we worked on in practice, we have to use in the matches. I don't think we have been out-matched in any of our competitions, it's just really been all mental."
Georgia State continued its weekend road trip on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. The Panthers (0-17) managed to win one of three doubles matches as William Adeimy and Lucas Thomaz defeated Winthrop's Arthur Takahashi and Diego Toledo 8-6 at No. 3. However, the Eagles escaped with the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Eagles continued to pick up points in singles, winning five of six matches. Jackson Moore picked up the Panthers' only singles point with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Sergey Beloy at No. 2.
Georgia State returns home this week with a 3 p.m. match against Kennesaw State. All home matches are played at the Sharon E. Lester Tennis Center in Piedmont Park.
