ATHENS, Ga. (Feb. 25, 2009) The Georgia State men's tennis team faced off against No. 2 Georgia on Wednesday afternoon, taking a 7-0 loss. With the loss, State falls to 0-11.
“I think the guys really competed on all of the courts today with great effort,” said Camerota. “Obviously it wasn't enough against a team like Georgia, but if we can take that competitiveness to our other matches throughout the season, we can improve.”
Starting the afternoon with doubles, UGA earned the overall point as the Bulldogs swept all three matches. Lucas Thomaz and William Adeimy teamed up to battle Josh Varela and Christian Vitulli at No. 2, falling 8-1. The Bulldogs clinched the point with an 8-2 win over Jackson Moore and Trenton Spinks by seventh-ranked Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt. The final doubles match came to an 8-2 decision as Orlando Battaglia and William Adeimy fell to Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz at No. 3.
After UGA took the doubles competition, the Panthers were unable to find a win in singles.
Falling first was William Adeimy in his 6-1, 6-2 loss to Christian Vitulli at No. 6. Georgia State's next loss came as Jackson Moore took a 6-2, 6-0 defeat against No. 7 Nate Schnugg at No. 1 singles. Trenton Spinks and Lucas Thomaz lost to Borja Malo (6-1, 6-1) and No. 80 Javier Garrapiz (6-1, 6-2), respectively.
The final two matches of the day ended with Henri Mangin battling No. 11 Nate Schnugg at No. 2 and Orlando Battaglia taking on Drake Bernstein. Mangin fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 and Battaglia dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 5.
Despite the loss, head coach Jarod Camerota was pleased with the team's performance against No. 2 Georgia.
The Panthers return home on Saturday, Feb. 28 as they host Cornell at the Sharon E. Lester Tennis Center in Piedmont Park. Match time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
