ATLANTA (Feb. 19, 2009) The Georgia State men's tennis team fell to No. 56 Georgia Tech on Thursday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Panthers are now 0-8 on the season.
Georgia Tech clinched two doubles matches to earn the early point. Trenton Spinks and Jackson Moore were the first to go down with an 8-2 loss to Tech's Kevin King and Doug Kenny at No. 2. The Yellow Jackets clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Nejc Podkrajsek and Martin Shishkov at No. 1. The Panthers' William Adeimy and Lucas Thomaz didn't give up the sweep, battling Miguel Muguruza and Eliot Potvin to the wire at No. 3, to earn an 8-7 victory.
Tech went on to win all of their singles matches, clinching the match win at No. 1 singles as No. 119 Nejc Podkrajsek fell 6-2, 6-1 to No. 7 Guillermo Gomez.
Georgia State will visit Memphis and No. 50 Mississippi State this weekend in Starkville, Miss. The Panthers will take on Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. (CT) and Mississippi State on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Memphis is currently 5-2 this season and enters Starkville after a weekend-split with Rhodes and then-ranked No. 28 Vanderbilt. The Tigers are led by Jorge Vasquez, who is ranked No. 51 in the country by the latest ITA polls, released today.
Mississippi State moved up two spots in the ITA polls, from No. 52 to No. 50, as released today. The Bulldogs are 2-2 on the year and recently defeated then-ranked No. 75 UAB, 5-2, last weekend.
