Verwey Takes Lead, Panthers in Front in Miami

Georgia State sophomore Iliska Verwey moved into a tie for the lead by posting a second round 73 (+1) at the Qdoba Invitational at the par 72 6,210 yard Don Shula's Golf Club in Miami, Fla. on Monday.

The 43rd ranked (Golfweek) Georgia State women's golf team leads the 14-team field at the Qdoba Invitational by five strokes after a 299 today, putting them +14 for the tournament after a 291 in the opening round on Sunday.

“The wind blew quite a bit today,” said Georgia State head coach Cathy Mant. “Overall we struck the ball well and played good, solid golf. It was just a little cooler today and the wind made it difficult to get to the harder pin locations.”

Verwey's 73 comes on the heels of another 73 on Sunday, good for a tie with a pair of Louisville golfers, Laura Anderson and 13th-ranked Cindy LaCrosse.

Senior Anna Scott led the tournament after day one, but suffered a setback on Monday by carding a 76 (+4), which drops her to fourth place. Scott shares fourth place with fellow Panther Cathrine Madsen who fired a 75 (+3) to go with her 72 from Sunday's first round.

Freshman Charlotte Lorentzen moved up two places to 16th by shooting a 76 (+4) to go with her first round of 75. Joining Lorentzen in 16th place is Sandra Maier, who moved up eight slots with a 75 (+3) after a 76 on Sunday.

Tuesday's final round figures to be a duel to the wire between eight golfers, three representing Georgia State. Verwey sits atop the leaderboard at +2 with LaCrosse and Anderson of Louisville.

Madsen and Scott follow the lead group by one shot at +3 alongside North Carolina State's Joanna Saleeby and James Madison's Kelly Lynch.

North Carolina State's 58th-ranked Lauren Doughtie occupies eighth place alone at +4.

In the team competition, Georgia State widened its three stroke lead from Sunday. The Panthers lead 16th-ranked Louisville (+19) by five shots. Following Louisville are 38th-ranked North Carolina State (+22), Washington State (+29), Tulane (+30), Oklahoma City (+36), Augusta State (+40), Miami (+43), James Madison (+43), Illinois State (+46), South Florida (+49), UNC Greensboro (+59), Memphis (+73), and Mercer (+94).

“I'm very happy with the way the girls are playing,” said Coach Mant. “We're looking forward to some rest tonight, and excited for the opportunity to bring home a victory tomorrow.”

Georgia State will try to defend their lead as competition resumes on Tuesday morning at 8:00 for the final round of the Qdoba Invitational.
