TAMPA, FLA. (Feb. 15, 2009) The Georgia State men's tennis team fell to No. 37 South Florida, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. Georgia State is now 0-7 on the season, and the Bulls improve to 4-2.
The Bulls opened the day winning three straight doubles matches to clinch their first point. William Adeimy and Lucas Thomaz fell 8-4 to Yannick Yoshizawa and Arzhang Derakhshani at No. 3. Nejc Podkrajsek and Martin Shishkov were the next to fall, dropping an 8-4 decision to USF's Lucas Jovita and Thomas Estrada, sealing the Bulls' doubles point.
In singles, USF quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Martin Shishkov at No. 2, and went on to win five straight wins. Trenton Spinks held the advantage in his match at No. 6, winning the first set 6-4, but USF's Mark Olijaca battled from behind to win 6-1 in the second and 7-5 in the third.
“Overall, we just didn't capitalize on our chances, and that can't happen,” said head coach Jarod Camerota. “We need everyone to be into their matches from start to finish, win or lose, showing determination. Thursday, we take on Georgia Tech and we have to be ready to go.”
Thursday's (Feb. 19) match up against in-town rival, Georgia Tech, is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Georgia Tech's campus.
